Alchemy Lamplighting

August 17, 2010

I was just surfing through the interwebz, and I found two pictures of me doing lamplighting at Alchemy last year. What is lamplighting?

As described by the Alchemy Festival website:

“The Lamplighters perform the important duty of lighting Alchemy each night. The team is responsible for building and installing lamp poles, cleaning and maintaining the lamps, and fueling, lighting and placing lamps, and associated pageantry, daily during the festival. The team coordinates with Site Layout regarding lamp pole placement.”

Basically, we light your way throughout the burn each night. Each night, right before sundown we walk the paths with our lamps, and one by one they get placed on the poles. Each path is lit, so that you can see where you’re going and get your bearings. It is an essential part of the event.
